Interview with Deavenu
About the band
Since forming a band whilst studying music at university, the band has continued to develop their lineup and sound whilst building a presence within the Scottish indie music scene.
How did the band first form?
The band formed when we all joined uni. We originally had a different lineup when we started, but that is also how we ended up meeting our newer members.
How would you describe your sound to someone who hasn't heard your music before?
Deavenu is a mix of indie rock, alternative rock, and pop punk.
Their music is shaped by a wide variety of British indie influences.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
We all have pretty different music tastes, but our sound is inspired by artists such as Sam Fender, Oasis, Catfish and the Bottlemen and Arctic Monkeys.
Music & Creativity
Like many bands, their songwriting process often starts with a simple musical idea that slowly develops into a full track.
What does your songwriting process usually look like as a band?
It usually starts with a chord progression. Once we have that, we build the song around the vibe that the progression gives us and then start writing lyrics from there.
Is there a song you are most proud of so far?
Right now, we would say our newest track 'Marching Band'. It was the first song we had started completely from scratch with Benny and Stewart since they joined the band, so it feels like an important step for us.
Live Shows
While writing and recording tracks is important, the band say that the real highlights for them come from performing their music to a live audience.
What's your favourite thing about playing live shows?
The crowd interaction. We still talk about it after gigs because we are always amazed by the crowds we get and how much energy they bring.
Do you have a favourite gig you've played so far?
We played Audio in Glasgow, back in January. When we got on stage people already knew who we were. The crowd was brilliant.
Looking ahead
For most emerging bands, building their audience is an extremely important part of their journey into the music industry.
What challenges have you faced so far as an emerging band?
Trying to get our name out there and build a fanbase is definitely the biggest challenge that we have faced so far. There are so many talented emerging artists who don't always get the opportunities or recognition that they deserve.
How important is social media for growing your audience?
It was massive for promoting our single 'Marching Band'. If we didn't promote our music on social media, nobody would know the song was out.
What can people expect from Deavenu next?
We are currently working on our second EP, which we are hoping to release in the summer. After that we will start to work on our debut album, if everything goes well. We have got plenty of gigs coming up, so keep an eye out.
With their new EP currently in the works and more performances just around the corner, Deavenu are pushing forward as an emerging band in Scotland. It is clear that they are just getting started.
